Frequently Asked Questions

Teeth straightening,
your questions answered

These are the questions Jack gets asked most about clear aligners. If yours isn’t here, ask it at your free phone or video consultation.

Clear aligners move your teeth gradually using a series of custom trays. I take a 3D scan of your teeth at your first appointment, plan exactly where each tooth needs to go, and you wear each aligner for around a week before moving to the next one in the sequence. Most people barely notice them once they’re in.

It depends on how far your teeth need to move. Simpler cases can finish in around six months, while more involved ones take closer to a year. You’ll usually see a visible difference within the first few weeks. I’ll give you an honest timeline at your consultation, and I’d rather quote you a realistic one than a flattering one.

You’ll feel some pressure for a day or two whenever you start a new aligner. That’s the aligner doing its job. It settles quickly, and most patients find it far more comfortable than they expected, especially compared with old-fashioned fixed braces.

Water is fine. For anything else, take them out. Hot drinks can warp the plastic and coloured food or drink will stain them. Give your teeth a quick brush before popping the aligners back in so nothing gets trapped underneath.

Aim for 20 to 22 hours. That leaves plenty of time for meals and cleaning your teeth. The treatment plan assumes consistent wear, so the more reliably you keep them in, the closer we stay to the timeline I’ve given you.
